Does anyone know what this caterpillar is please?
Janet Ward – 16th July 2019
Ed. Thank you Janet for this great picture of one of our most exotic caterpillars. I saw one for the first time last year and identified it as a Rusty Tussock Moth (also known as The Vapourer moth). They have four distinctive tufts on their backs which remind me of scrubbing-brush bristles. Strangely, the adult female moths have small stubs for wings and cannot fly and the males are surprisingly dull for such an extraordinary caterpillar. They are day-flying moths.
